Cavalry in Command An Army
The launch closer — strongest when it waits, weakest when it jousts a spear lane.
Cavalry is the troop Command An Army players argue about in the shortest sentences: it is generally the strongest, and most maps are still defense-biased, so a bad charge is the fastest way to donate a round. Official thumbnails put the commander on a rearing horse in front of a shield army. That image is the fantasy. This page is the job.
If you need ranks, see troop tiers. If you need a full package, see compositions. If you need the anti-horse answer, see infantry.
What Cavalry is for
Horses close. They punish a wall that rotated, a blob that has no facing, or a backline that chased a Scout Rider. They are not a mobile shield. They are not a capture camper as good as Shieldmen. They are a timer you start after the rest of the army has a shape.
A good Cavalry player in a 12-player server does three things:
- Starts off-angle, not in the spear throat.
- Waits until the enemy wall commits.
- Leaves the point to Shieldmen the whole time.
A bad Cavalry player does the opposite and then types that spears are broken. Spears are doing the job the circle method paid for.
Buying horses with launch gems
Redeem codes first. Do not buy Cavalry as your only unit. The order is wall, spears, then horses. If gems are short, a thin Cavalry reserve still beats zero closers, but a fat Cavalry and no wall loses to any Package D on compositions.
Skip Summon Spin does not make horses. It skips spin animations if Cavalry is behind a roll. Prefer a shop purchase if the game offers one. Inventory space matters once duplicates appear; delete extra horses you cannot micro instead of hiding them behind the +50 pass.
Defend with Cavalry
Default stance is defend. Horses sit in reserve. When the enemy charge bounces on spears, you leave through a gap and hit their now-open back. You do not stand in the front rank “to help the wall.” Front-rank horses eat the first contact that shields were designed to eat.
If the enemy never comes, you still win the bias by standing near the point with the wall. Do not take the unused horses on a tour of the map. Captures, not sightseeing.
Attack with Cavalry
Only attack when the hook is real. Soak with cheap shields, send horses wide, dump a body on the point when their ring turns. If they do not turn, abort. Defense-biased maps charge a tax on ego.
The red-arrow thumbnail of a horse in your face is the attack you are trying to be, and also the attack you are trying to stop. If you cannot tell which one you are this round, you are not ready to press Attack. Use the match checklist.
Matchups
- Versus Spearman: You lose the front collision. Go around or wait. Never “test the lane.”
- Versus Shieldman: You lose a long frontal grind. You win a side hit after they rotate.
- Versus Spartan: Elite infantry in a circle is a hard chew. Do not chew. Collapse a gap.
- Versus Scout Rider: Do not let your backline peel off with the Rider while your horses are mid-charge. That is a double feed.
- Versus more Cavalry: First collision is chaos. The team with a wall still standing on the point wins.
Micro notes
Camera up. If you cannot see spears, you are about to discover them personally. Issue the charge as a group. Staggered horses are a gift. On mobile, do not charge while your thumb covers the order cluster — set the shape first, controls second.
Launch lag makes panic clicks worse. Fewer horses you can still steer beat a stampede you cannot cancel. BUGFIX gems will not steer them for you.
When Cavalry gets patched
LEBALANCE already happened once. If horses are nerfed, they remain a closer until the job is given to someone else. Do not sell the entire role. Re-read updates and keep the wall. Command An Army is still an army game if Cavalry goes from S to A.
Ride last, not first. That is the whole Cavalry guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for codes, troops, and match setups.
Is Cavalry the best troop in Command An Army?
It is the launch closer. It is not the first buy and it is not immune to Spearmen.
Should I put Cavalry in the Castle circle?
No. Keep horses in reserve. The circle is Shieldman, Spearman, Spartan.
Why do my horses die instantly?
You charged a spear lane or arrived without a wall. See formations.
Cavalry on attack or defend?
Both, but default defend. Attack only with a hook, as in compositions.
