How to Win Command An Army Matches
Defense-first planning, capture discipline, and when to actually send Cavalry.
Winning Command An Army is less about personal aim and more about not donating the point. The game is team-versus-team. Servers hold 12. Maps at launch are widely described as defense biased. Cavalry is widely described as the strongest troop. If you ignore those two community reads, you will pad the other team’s First Victory badge.
This page is the match plan. For buttons see controls. For the loop see how to play. For named shapes see formations.
Rule 1: default to defend
If your team has not spoken, defend. Defense-biased maps mean the attacker has to break a prepared facing. Shieldmen and red-shield infantry exist for that job. Spearmen exist for the horse that tries to skip the job. You still need a closer for when the attack stalls — that is Cavalry as a counter-charge, not as your entire personality.
Attack when:
- You already won a defend round and the enemy is tilted into a bad shape.
- You brought a Scout Rider answer and a real flank, not a hope.
- The point is empty because five people are fighting in a corner that does not score.
Attack into a formed Castle circle without a plan is how you donate.
Rule 2: the point is the win condition
Captures are in the official description. Stand on the point with a wall. If your Cavalry gets a beautiful wipe 40 studs away while the point flips, you still lost. Assign Shieldmen to the objective and let horses work the edge. The match checklist starts with “who is standing on the point?” for this reason.
Rule 3: one shape beats a mixed blob
Thirty mixed troops with no facing lose to a smaller circle. The Castle method wants Spartan, Shieldman, Spearman. Shields take the hit, spears punish Cavalry, Spartans hold the identity of the circle. If you do not own those three, approximate: wall + anti-horse + elite infantry. Buy them with codes gems using the gem planner.
Rule 4: Cavalry is a timer, not a lifestyle
Players say Cavalry is generally the strongest. That is true until it runs into spears that were placed on purpose. Winning with Cavalry means:
- Wait until the enemy wall turns or over-commits.
- Hit a side, not the spear front.
- Recall the idea of a counter-charge if you are defending. Horses that sit in the front rank eat the first volley.
If Scout Riders are ruining you, that unit has a dedicated counter conversation in the community — see troops and the Cavalry page instead of rage-buying more horses.
Rule 5: 12 players punish silence
A 12-player cap means one person who AFKs in the codes window during a capture is a real percentage of the team. Redeem before the round. Call attack or defend in chat. If pubs refuse, take Discord people from official links. You cannot out-micro three disconnected blobs.
A defend round, narrated
You load Castle. You already own the circle trio plus a small Cavalry reserve. You place the circle on the point, spears covering the likely horse lane. You press defend. You do not chase the first enemy who runs past. You wait. Their Cavalry hits spears and melts. Your reserve horses leave through a gap and hit their backline. You never emptied the point. You win. That is the “best defence” idea in the embedded video, translated into a checklist.
An attack round, narrated
You only attack because their circle is late. You form off-point, not in their spear face. Shieldmen absorb the first contact. Cavalry goes wide. You dump bodies on the capture the moment their wall rotates to the horses. If the wall does not rotate, you abort and you do not feed. Feeding is how defense-biased maps stay defense-biased.
Lag, bugs, and honesty
Launch week was buggy and laggy. BUGFIX paid 250 gems because of it. If your orders hitch, simplify the army. A smaller, fully ordered line beats a huge roster you cannot steer on a lag spike. Check updates after a title update before you invent a new meta.
What not to do
- Do not open the codes window mid-capture.
- Do not spend the whole gem stack on summons you will not field. Read how to get Spartans first.
- Do not mirror the enemy’s attack because it looks brave.
- Do not ignore spears because Cavalry is “S tier” on a list. Tiers assume you place the unit correctly.
Win the boring way. Then go flex on compositions once First Victory is out of the way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for codes, troops, and match setups.
Is defense really better in Command An Army?
At launch, players and clips treat most maps as defense-biased. Default to defend unless you have a flank plan.
How do I beat Cavalry?
Place Spearmen on the charge lane and do not turn the wall. See formations and infantry.
Why do I lose even with more troops?
Facing and the capture matter more than headcount. A blob is not a formation.
Should I attack after one good defend?
Only if their shape is broken. Otherwise keep defending and take the free map bias.
