How to Play Command An Army
The real loop: roster, formation, attack or defend, then the capture — not running in alone.
How to play Command An Army is easy to say and easy to play wrong. The official description is the whole loop: command your army into massive team-versus-team warfare, choose to attack or defend, recruit troops, capture points, order formations, collect and upgrade. If you treat it like a third-person fighter, you will die in front of a shield wall that was waiting for you.
This page is the loop in playable order. Pair it with controls for the buttons and getting started if you have not redeemed codes yet.
The loop in one screen
- Own a roster — gems, summons, and upgrades happen outside the chaotic second of a charge.
- Form the army — place Shieldmen, Spearmen, Spartans, Cavalry where they can actually support each other.
- Pick a side of the round — attack or defend. The HUD shows E on both in the official art because it is a choice, not a hidden mode.
- Play the objective — captures win more rounds than highlight kills.
- Issue orders — formations and facing matter more than your personal sword swing.
- Reset — spend new gems, drop bad summons, queue again.
That is the game. Everything else is flavor on top of those six steps.
Recruiting is a strategy screen
Recruiting is not “buy the unit with the coolest helmet.” Command An Army launched with a clear community read: Cavalry is generally the strongest troop, maps are often defense biased, and a Castle cheese called the circle method wants Spartan + Shieldman + Spearman. Those three sentences should drive your first shops. Details live on the troop roster and compositions.
Gems come from codes and from playing. Upgrades make a unit worth keeping. A cheap troop that you never form up is a wasted slot in a cap that is not infinite. Pre-release clips showed 300-troop stress tests. Live matches are not that. Keep the army small enough to command.
Attack versus defend
Attack means you are trying to break a line and take a point. Defend means you are trying to hold yours. Because many maps lean defense, a random attack into a formed shield wall is the default loss. If your friends already called defend, you should too, or you split the team for no reason.
When you attack:
- Bring a closer (Cavalry) and a way to deal with spears.
- Do not trickle. A staggered charge is free food.
- Aim at a flank or a capture, not the thickest red shield row.
When you defend:
- Shields face the likely charge lane.
- Spearmen sit where horses have to arrive.
- Cavalry waits as a counter-charge, not as a decorative front rank.
How to win expands this. The match checklist is the pre-round version.
Formations are the skill
Ordering formations is in the official feature list for a reason. A blob of 30 mixed troops loses to 20 troops that face the same way. The Castle circle method is the first named community tactic: Spartan, Shieldman, Spearman, recommended on Castle. Read formations and practice it in a quiet server before you try to showboat in a full 12-player match.
If you cannot issue a formation yet, you are still in tutorial brain. Stay on controls until the order keys are muscle memory.
Captures beat duels
The description says capture points. Play that literally. A beautiful Cavalry wipe that happens after the point flipped still loses. Assign at least part of the line to stand on the objective. Shieldmen are better at that than Scout Riders. If the enemy is circling, that is what the circle method is answering — not with more running, with a shape.
Fighting alongside the army
You are allowed to fight. The commander on the horse in the hero art is in the melee. Just do not be the only one in the melee. If your troops are still walking up while you are already dead, you issued the attack too early. Lead the line, then commit.
Counter-play exists. IQ333’s Scout Rider counter clip exists because a unit can be answered. If a troop is embarrassing you, open the troop tier list and the infantry page instead of buying more of whatever just died.
After the round
Upgrade what worked. Delete what you never deployed. Check updates if a patch just shipped — LEBALANCE was a real day-two code, which means numbers can move. Then queue again with the same formation if it won, or swap attack/defend if it did not.
How to play Command An Army is not a hidden combo. It is roster discipline plus the courage to defend on a defense map. Once that feels boring in a good way, you are ready for how to win.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for codes, troops, and match setups.
What is the core loop in Command An Army?
Recruit, form up, choose attack or defend, capture points, and issue formation orders. Details stay on this page and on formations.
Can I just fight with my avatar?
You can, but the game scores army fights and captures. Lead the line instead of dueling away from it.
Is Cavalry required?
It is the community closer, not a law. See the Cavalry page and tier list.
How many troops can I command?
Not the 300-troop test clips. Keep a roster you can actually order. Inventory notes are in getting started.
