Command An Army Formations
Castle circle method, shield walls, and how to face Cavalry without collapsing.
Formations are a listed pillar of Command An Army, not a cosmetic. The difference between a 12-player win and a feed is usually facing: shields toward the charge, spears on the horse lane, closer in reserve. This page names the first community shape and the boring walls that still win defense-biased maps.
If you need buttons, use controls. If you need the round plan, use how to win. If you need who to buy, use compositions.
The Castle circle method
Community clips call it the circle method. The shopping list is explicit: Spartan, Shieldman, Spearman. The recommended map is Castle. Layout notes live on maps.
What it is trying to do:
- Shieldman takes the hit and holds the ring.
- Spearman punishes Cavalry that tries to crash the ring.
- Spartan is the elite infantry that keeps the circle from being a hollow shield prop.
How to set it:
- Own the three troop types. If you do not, farm codes and follow how to get Spartans.
- Queue Castle if you can influence the map. The method is map-named for a reason.
- Build a ring on or around the capture, not in a decorative courtyard the point does not use.
- Face shields outward. A circle that looks inward is a bowl for horses.
- Keep spears covering the likely approach, not stacked in one clump that a flank ignores.
- Hold defend unless the enemy circle is late. Castle plus defense bias plus a finished ring is the launch “easy win” package.
- Cavalry, if you have it, stays as a counter, not as a fourth ring piece that stretches the shape.
If the enemy also circles, do not break yours first. The first commander who unpacks the ring to chase usually donates the point. That patience is the whole trick, which is why a short TikTok can look like magic.
The straight wall
Not every map is Castle. A straight wall is the portable version:
- Shield rank in front.
- Spear rank behind or in the horse lane gap.
- Cavalry off to the side, not in the front row.
- Commander behind the wall until the collision happens.
Place the wall on the point. A prettier wall on a ridge that does not score is a statue. Official art with two colored infantry blocks facing each other is this idea: blue-yellow swords versus red shields, a lane in the middle, a choice of attack or defend hanging over it.
The failed blob
A blob is not a formation. Mixed swords, a Scout Rider, two horses, and a Spearman facing the wrong way will lose to a smaller wall. Symptoms:
- Your Cavalry arrives first and dies in spears.
- Your shields face your own horses.
- Nobody is on the capture.
- You are still in the codes window.
Fix: delete the units you never order, then rebuild one of the two shapes above. Inventory clutter is why +50 Inventory Space exists, but a pass will not organize the blob for you.
Facing Cavalry
Cavalry is the community S-tier closer. Formations exist to make that statement conditional. Spears want horses to arrive in a funnel. If you spread spears into a dotted line, horses go through the gaps. If you hide spears behind shields that never open, horses bounce. If you open the wall too early to chase, horses go through the hole you made.
Counter-charge only after the bounce. That is the defend version of “best defence” in the how to win video.
Attack formations
Attack is not “delete the wall.” It is a second shape:
- A cheap wall to soak the first contact.
- A wide Cavalry hook.
- A dump onto the point the moment their ring rotates.
If you cannot hook, do not attack. Defense-biased maps will tax you. Practice the hook in a low-stakes server. Twelve-player matches are not your laboratory.
Orders while the shape lives
You will still move pieces. Micro is rotating a spear rank, not sending everyone to the first enemy that jumps. If lag hits, stop rotating. A frozen good wall beats a panicking circle. Launch BUGFIX gems will not replace that discipline.
Practice order
- Straight wall on a quiet map.
- Castle circle with the three named troops.
- Add Cavalry reserve.
- Only then try an attack hook.
Use the match checklist until the order is automatic. Use infantry if you cannot remember who is the wall versus who is the spear. Formations are how Command An Army stops being a crowd simulator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for codes, troops, and match setups.
What is the circle method in Command An Army?
A Castle setup using Spartan, Shieldman, and Spearman in a ring on the point, usually on defend.
Do I need Cavalry in the circle?
No. Keep Cavalry as a reserve closer. Putting horses in the ring stretches the shape.
What if I cannot queue Castle?
Run a straight shield-and-spear wall on the point. Same jobs, fewer fancy angles.
Why does my circle still lose?
It is facing inward, off the point, or you unpacked it to chase. Hold the ring; see how to win.
