Infantry in Command An Army

Shieldman, Spearman, and Spartan — the three jobs that make a defense actually a defense.

Infantry Roster

Infantry is how Command An Army stays an army game when everyone wants to be Cavalry. The Castle circle method is literally three infantry names: Spartan, Shieldman, Spearman. Official art is two infantry blocks staring at each other with Attack and Defend hanging over the lane. If you skip this page, you skip the default win.

Ranks: troop tiers. Placement: formations. Unlock for the elite: how to get Spartans.

Shieldman — the wall

Shieldman exists to stand on the point and face the charge. Slow is not a dump stat here. A shield rank that holds five more seconds is a capture. Buy this first with code gems. If the model in your shop is a red Roman-style shield instead of a round blue-yellow, it is still the wall job until a patch says otherwise.

Place outward. A shield rank facing your own Cavalry is how you friendly-fire the plan. On defend, they do not chase Scout Riders. On attack, they are the soak that lets horses go wide — compositions.

Spearman — the tax on horses

Spearman is why Cavalry is not a religion. Put spears on the approach the horses must use. A dotted spear line with gaps is not a tax, it is a suggestion. Stack enough to make a funnel, then leave it alone. The commander who pulls spears out of the funnel to “help” on the left is the commander who gets mounted on the right.

If you are losing to horses with Spearmen “in the army,” they are not in the lane. Camera up. Controls are part of this unit.

Spartan — the stitch

Spartan is elite infantry, not a third spear and not a prettier shield. In the circle, Spartans keep the ring from being two props. Unlock videos exist because the unit is gated behind shop progression or summons. Do not spend the entire launch gem pile on Spartan spins before you own Shieldman and Spearman. A lone Spartan is a highlight; a Spartan in a ring is a win.

Spartans versus Samurai is a real matchup people record. That does not make Spartan a duelist you send away from the point. Keep the elite on the shape.

Sword infantry you have not named yet

The blue-yellow sword line in the Attack/Defend thumbnail is generic sword infantry. Until we have a stable shop name, treat it as a cheaper soak or a filler rank, not as a circle piece. If it cannot hold like a Shieldman or tax like a Spearman, it does not replace them.

Building the infantry core in order

  1. Shieldmen until the wall is visible.
  2. Spearmen until the horse lane looks stupid to charge.
  3. Spartan when you can, for Castle.
  4. Stop. Cavalry is next, on the Cavalry page, not more random swords.

That order is also the gem planner. Infantry is the budget that makes S-tier horses legal to click.

Infantry on attack

You still bring a wall. Attack packages that delete infantry because “we are the horses now” are why defense-biased maps exist. Take cheap shields, take a few spears against the counter-charge, take horses wide. Infantry walks onto the point when the enemy ring rotates. Infantry does not have to get the kill to get the win.

Infantry in a 12-player pub

If two teammates already rolled Cavalry, you are infantry even if you wanted to be the hero. Say it in chat. A server with three walls and no closer is also bad, but it is less bad than three horse mains on Castle defend. Staff the boring jobs.

When a patch changes spear length or shield HP, infantry jobs remain. Only the numbers move — balance patch. Keep buying walls.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for codes, troops, and match setups.

What infantry do I need for the circle method?

Spartan, Shieldman, and Spearman. Placement is on formations.

Should I buy Spartans before Shieldmen?

No. Wall first, spears second, Spartan third. See how to get Spartans.

Do Spearmen work on maps that are not Castle?

Yes. Any map where Cavalry exists wants a spear lane.

Are sword troops part of the core?

They are fillers and soaks until named. Do not let them replace Shieldman or Spearman.
